The AVVBA dedicates its 21st memorial to PFC Gentry, honoring his heroic actions on 9 November 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam where he was posthumously awarded not only the Purple Heart but also the Silver Star, an award given for heroic action in the face of the enemy. PFC Gentry, of "B" Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry, Americal Division, U.S. Army, was assigned as a crewmember of an M113 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) operating west of Que Son. As his APC was moving ground troops in for an assault, it was hit directly by enemy recoilless rifle fire. Of the five crewmen aboard, only PFC Gentry was uninjured by the blast. Reacting immediately and in complete disregard for his own safety, he helped the wounded to the safety of a nearby embankment. After courageously making three trips with the lightly wounded, PFC Gentry returned a fourth time to aid the one seriously wounded man. Returning through intense enemy automatic fire to his disabled vehicle, he carried his wounded comrade to an awaiting APC for evacuation. Once he had assured the safety of his entire crew, he moved to another vehicle and was mortally wounded by a burst of enemy fire as he climbed aboard. Through PFC Gentry's intrepid gallantry and his unselfish devotion to duty, the lives of four of his comrades were saved. As the Silver Star citation concludes, PFC Gentry's unquestioned valor was in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
